Organogenesis: Drosophila goes gonadal
نویسنده
چکیده
In many animals, germ cells migrate to the gonad to assemble into a functional organ. Recent work in Drosophila has built a picture of the gene activities that specify the gonad and allow it to attract germ cells, and has led to the identification of a gene, columbus, that may encode the attractive factor.

Dmaf, a novel member of Maf transcription factor family is expressed in somatic gonadal cells during embryonic development and gametogenesis in Drosophila.
Members of the maf gene family encode basic/leucine zipper transcription factors and play important roles during cell differentiation and organogenesis in vertebrate development. In this study, we show that the maf family is evolutionarily conserved and that the Drosophila maf (Dmaf) gene is expressed in somatic gonadal cells. During embryonic development, Dmaf mRNA is detected in somatic gonad...

DE-cadherin and its novel regulator, the transmembrane protein Fear of Intimacy, have been found to control the adhesive interactions between germline and somatic cells that lead to gonad formation in Drosophila.
متن کاملZiwi, the zebrafish homologue of the Drosophila piwi: co-localization with vasa at the embryonic genital ridge and gonad-specific expression in the adults
PIWI regulates the proliferation and maintenance of germline stem cells in diverse organisms. The full-length 3.26 kb ziwi cDNA, the zebrafish homologue of piwi of Drosophila, encodes a putative protein of 858 amino acids. ZIWI is 65% homologous with the mouse and human PIWI, but only 38 and 33% with Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila PIWI, respectively. In adult zebrafish, ziwi is expressed...

متن کاملStage-specific control of niche positioning and integrity in the Drosophila testis
A fundamental question is how complex structures are maintained after their initial specification. Stem cells reside in a specialized microenvironment, called niche, which provides essential signals controlling stem cell behavior. We addressed this question by studying the Drosophila male stem cell niche, called the hub. Once specified, the hub cells need to maintain their position and architec...
